The Essence: Redefining Space with Innovative Design

Transforming Defects into Strengths

In a common multi-family residential space, designer Shih Chieh Kao encountered the challenge of large beams and imbalanced structures. However, instead of seeing these as flaws, Kao saw an opportunity to turn them into unique strengths. By converting materials and introducing sunlight, Kao upgraded the quality and inner spirit of life in this space, maximizing its function and storage while presenting the purest and most comfortable essence.

One of the standout features of The Essence is a large beam that crosses the apartment at a height of less than 210 cm. Rather than concealing or removing it, Kao embraced the beam and transformed it into the soul of the space. Both sides of the beam are covered with large zebra wood and titanium-plated metal, reinforcing its visual impact and subverting its initial defect.

To relieve the pressure caused by the low beam, Kao employed a creative solution. The beam and ceilings are connected and extended obliquely with curves, weakening the stiffness of the structure and expanding the upward vision of the space. This design choice not only addresses the practical issue but also adds an artistic touch to the apartment.

Furthermore, Kao prioritized the storage and functionality of the space. In the public sphere, the fragmented areas were rearranged to create a long table for family gathering and bonding. Most of the storage space was strategically placed in the private sphere, customized based on the needs of different users. This approach keeps the public space clean and simple while allowing for a harmonious and distraction-free environment for the residents.

The color palette of The Essence revolves around lotos plaster and wooden textures, creating a sense of intensity and sensibility on the walls and beam. Light bands and metal accents add visual depth and a humanistic touch to the space. The master bedroom is divided into a working area and a sleeping area using grilles. The bed faces a large window, and the diagonally upward opening of the ceiling offers a view of the sky while lying in bed. The grilles are strategically designed to interact with sunlight, creating beautiful light and shadow patterns that change throughout the day.

The Essence is a testament to the meticulous research and creative problem-solving undertaken by Shih Chieh Kao. By embracing and transforming the existing defects of the space, Kao has created a unique and functional design that enhances the quality of life for its residents.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. The award acknowledges the outstanding and creatively ingenious nature of The Essence, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. This design not only exhibits strong technical and creative skills but also contributes to improving the quality of life, making the world a better place.
